The adoption of various legislative acts has forced the foreign agent network to operate within the law, and ultimately the opposition, constrained within the legal framework, has been weakened, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters.
According to him, it is of fundamental importance that a state decision be reached regarding the constitutional lawsuit seeking to ban political parties.
“We promised the voters that we would neutralize the foreign agent network in our country, and we are delivering on that promise in practice. The ongoing processes, including internal confrontation, are a continuation of the developments that unfolded in our country following the 2024 parliamentary elections. The opposition representatives brought this condition upon themselves—or rather, their patrons brought these politicians to such a state. This is not an opposition at all; in reality, it is a network of foreign agents.
Today, the foreign agent network in Georgia is weakened, and the steps taken by the authorities have played a decisive role in this. Among them, key decisions included the adoption of the ‘On Transparency’ legislation, the passage of the law ‘On Grants,’ the approval of several other legislative acts, as well as the proper regulation of assembly rules, and so forth. All of this forced the foreign agent network to stay within the bounds of the law, and as a result, the opposition, confined within a legal framework, has weakened.
This process must continue. Once again, I emphasize the importance of the constitutional lawsuit: we have filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court seeking to ban specific political parties, and it is crucial that a state decision be made on this issue—a decision that aligns with the national interest,” Kobakhidze stated.
