According to the Administration of the Government of Georgia, diplomatic relations will be established between Georgia and the Republic of Nauru.
As noted in the statement, the corresponding document will be signed in New York during the Georgian Prime Minister’s visit.
“The Government of Georgia issued a decree today on signing the protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Republic of Nauru,” the statement reads.
As a reminder, Nauru previously officially announced the withdrawal of its recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Consequently, the Pacific island nation severed diplomatic relations with the authorities of the occupied Georgian regions.
Nauru was among the few UN member states that followed Russia’s lead and recognized the independence of Sokhumi and Tskhinvali after 2008. Currently, along with the Russian Federation, those states are Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Syria. Two other Pacific island nations — Vanuatu and Tuvalu — had previously withdrawn their recognition.
