When thinking of the rugged mining town of Chiatura, images of cable cars, ore carts, and miners’ helmets immediately spring to mind. Yet hardly anyone would associate this corner of Imereti with crisp tennis whites, manicured lawns, and the resonant crack of a ball striking racket strings. And yet, it was Chiatura’s manganese that, quite unexpectedly, brought tennis to Georgia.
