Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York. According to the government’s press office, the sides discussed cooperation between Georgia and the UN, the regional situation, as well as security challenges and humanitarian issues in the occupied territories of Georgia.
“The conversation addressed challenges to international peace and security, as well as the particular importance of multilateral partnerships in ensuring long-term stability and prosperity. As noted during the meeting, the fact that peace, security, and sustainable development are the central theme of the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly underscores the profound relevance of this issue,” the statement read.
According to the government, Kobakhidze thanked Guterres for supporting Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also emphasized the importance of the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly regarding internally displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.
Following the meeting, Kobakhidze posted on the social media platform X that he had discussed Georgia’s cooperation with the UN and opportunities to strengthen their partnership with Guterres.
“Pleased to meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. During our conversation, we discussed Georgia’s cooperation with the UN, the organization’s role in the conflict resolution process in Georgia, and opportunities to further strengthen our partnership.”
According to Levan Zhorzholiani, Head of the Government Administration, the meeting also covered the domestic situation, economic indicators, and developments in Georgia’s neighborhood.
“Over the past five years, we have recorded the highest economic growth not only in the region but across Europe—it stands at 9.3%, and reaches 7.9% this year. We discussed how vital it is that this economic growth and the wealth generated in the country are distributed among Georgian citizens and felt by every individual,” Levan Zhorzholiani stated.
On the sidelines of his UN visit, Kobakhidze also held bilateral meetings with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset, Swiss Foreign Minister and OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Ignazio Cassis, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and President of Nauru David Adeang. During talks with the latter, diplomatic relations were established between Georgia and Nauru.
Kobakhidze is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 24.
