Georgia’s current authorities are serving Russia, and the situation can only be remedied if the entire country unites. The fifth president of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, made this statement during her address to the French National Assembly.
According to her, “the regime enjoys broad support from the Kremlin, receiving congratulations alternately from Kremlin spokespersons and from the leaders themselves.”
“In Georgia, virtually everything has already been criminalized: expressing opinions, simply standing on a sidewalk; several individuals have already been convicted and arrested for views posted on Facebook, and a dedicated department has been established within the Ministry of Internal Affairs to monitor citizens’ posts.
This is a regime in the service of Russia—whether coerced or voluntary, no one will ever be able to prove, yet what we are witnessing is not merely pro-Russian narratives in propaganda, but pro-Russian political positions; the regime enjoys broad support from the Kremlin, receiving congratulations alternately from Kremlin spokespersons and from the leaders themselves,” the fifth president stated.
According to Zourabichvili, Georgia’s future depends primarily on Georgian society itself, on political and non-political civic forces, culture, the media, and those who continue to resist:
“An externally backed authoritarian regime can be defeated only when the country unites against an existential threat. The current situation already goes beyond ordinary inter-party competition and demands a unified response not only from political parties, but from all of civil society,” Salome Zourabichvili said, addressing deputies of the French National Assembly.
