The European Union Delegation in Tbilisi has issued a statement marking the 33rd anniversary of the fall of Sokhumi. On this day, national flags were flown at half-mast across Georgia.
“September 27, the day of the fall of Sokhumi, remains one of the most tragic days in Georgia’s modern history.
We honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the war, and our thoughts are with those who are still unable to return to their homes.
The European Union firmly supports the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders and reaffirms its commitment to the peaceful resolution of the conflict.”
Earlier, statements in support of Georgia’s territorial integrity and in memory of the victims of the 1990s war in Abkhazia were issued by Western diplomatic missions accredited in Tbilisi.
