Georgia Releases on Bail Furgal Advisor Sought for Extradition by Russia

timofeev News

Mikhail Timofeyev, a former aide to ex-governor of Khabarovsk Krai Sergei Furgal, has been released from custody in Georgia. The publication Paper Kartuli reported this, citing human rights advocate Roman Kislyak. Timofeyev was released on bail of 50,000 lari (approximately $19,000).

In addition to the bail, Timofeyev must: report to the Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia three times a week; remain at home from 22:00 to 06:00; not leave Georgia; report any change of address within 24 hours; and surrender his passport or any other identity document to the prosecutor’s office should he obtain one.

As a reminder, on September 29, the UN Human Rights Committee urged Georgia not to extradite Timofeyev to Russia while it reviews his complaint. Earlier, on September 4, the Tbilisi City Court ruled in favor of his extradition. Furgal’s former advisor was detained in Georgia in January 2026. He had arrived in March 2024 and applied for asylum, claiming political persecution in Russia; however, Georgian authorities rejected his request. In Russia, Timofeyev is accused of complicity in the murders and attempted murders of business owners in 2004–2005.
