Russia pursues its interests in the Caucasus and will firmly defend them, stated Mikhail Kalugin, Director of the Fourth Department of the CIS Countries at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). According to him, Moscow is committed to cooperating with the countries of the region.
“As a Caucasian power, we have our own national interests in this region, and we will firmly defend them.”
Kalugin noted that Russia needs the Caucasus as a zone of stability and lasting peace: “And not for idealistic reasons, but for entirely pragmatic ones. This is a vital space for us.”
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry representative, stability in the Caucasus ensures the security of Russia’s southern borders, the smooth operation of trade corridors, infrastructure development, and the growing well-being of citizens.
“We want to have strong and prosperous states beside us, rather than weak neighbors vulnerable to external pressure. After all, the fundamental interests of Russia and the South Caucasus nations are largely inseparable from one another.”
In addition, Kalugin stated that Moscow has plenty to offer its partners in the South Caucasus.
“This includes access to our vast market, transport connectivity, supplies of several critical goods at favorable prices, food and energy security, investment, and cooperation in industry and high technology.”
The diplomat added that the Russian Federation will continue to promote a constructive agenda in the region based on sovereign equality and respect for mutual interests.
