European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has recorded a video address to the citizens of Georgia, announcing “Europe Day” in Kakheti—a region “renowned for its hospitality and ancient traditions.”
Georgian polyphonic singing served as the backdrop to the address, which Kos said reminded her of Europe’s diversity. According to the Commissioner, the EU is not merely geography: “It is people—very different people united by shared values and the understanding that we are stronger together.”
“A piece of music can tell the story of an entire people. In my view, that is precisely what happens in Georgian polyphony: distinct, unique voices blend together to create a beautiful harmony. That is how I see Europe, too.
What inspires me most in Georgia are the people steadfastly pursuing the European path. Your faith in freedom, democracy, and a European future gives me immense hope. I know that many in Georgia feel uncertain today, but I want you to know: whatever challenges lie ahead, the EU continues to believe in Georgia’s European future.”
Marta Kos added that “Europe Day” in Kakheti is designed to bring Georgians together and showcase the opportunities the EU opens up for the country.
