UN Human Rights Council Adopts Resolution on Georgia’s Occupied Regions

geneva News

The UN Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution on the occupied regions of Georgia. The session was held in Geneva on October 7.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, the document addresses the human rights situation in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region, with the Council demanding unimpeded access to the occupied territories for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), as well as international and regional human rights mechanisms.

The resolution also condemns Russia’s actions aimed at the annexation of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region and reaffirms support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

The authors express concern over instances of discrimination and human rights abuses against the ethnic Georgian population in the regions occupied by Russia.

The document also underscores the importance of the Geneva International Discussions, established under the Ceasefire Agreement of August 12, 2008.

The resolution, sponsored by Georgia, was adopted by consensus, as it was last year.
