An inmate has died at Penitentiary Facility No. 2 in the city of Kutaisi. The incident occurred on October 9, but details have only now come to light.
According to the press service of the Special Penitentiary Service, the deceased shared a cell with five other inmates. On October 9, his cellmates notified prison staff that the man had fallen face-down from the upper bunk.
The agency noted that an emergency medical crew was dispatched to the scene and the prison’s on-site medical personnel arrived at the cell immediately, but they were unable to save the inmate.
The penitentiary service clarified that the deceased had been admitted to the facility just a few days prior to the incident.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
