Speaker of Georgian Parliament slams EU’s “immature” policy: “They are acting like children”

The EU’s decision not to invite Georgia to the EU Enlargement Forum demonstrates who holds a destructive stance in relations between Tbilisi and Brussels. This was how Parliamentary Speaker Shalva Papuashvili responded to reports that the EU leadership had not invited Georgian delegates to the forum scheduled for November 15–16 in Brussels.

“When [EU foreign policy chief Kaja] Kallas says that looking deeply into issues regarding Georgia and the Black Sea is not her task, it demonstrates her superficiality. She does not delve into these details because she is superficial in her foreign policy.

This is obvious, and that is precisely why the European Union’s foreign policy today is immature, and the bloc itself has lost its global role. There is not a single major power today that reckons with the EU as a global force.

As for not inviting Georgia, this also shows who in Georgia–EU relations is intent on boycotts, is destructive, and obstructs dialogue. It is abundantly clear that the EU is the destructive party in these relations, whereas Georgia maintains a constructive position.”

According to Papuashvili, the Georgian side is ready to await the Europeans at the negotiating table. “Wherever the European Union chose confrontation, it lost, pushed other countries into even graver mistakes, and plunged them into major trouble. We do not believe we should follow the EU’s confrontational policy. We are sitting at the dialogue table, waiting for Brussels representatives to take their seats. Our stance is constructive, and it is time for the European Union to return to a constructive track.”

In addition, the parliamentary speaker addressed a question regarding how he assesses the fact that only former Public Defender (Ombudsman) Nino Lomjaria was invited from Georgia to the November enlargement conference, while state officials are typically invited to discuss enlargement issues.

“Nino Lomjaria was an instrument of Brussels’ hybrid attack and interference in Georgia’s 2024 elections. She was funded by various European foundations to interfere in the elections from the outside. She spread disinformation regarding the elections and, while serving as Public Defender, lied about Saakashvili’s health. Nino Lomjaria was an instrument of a hybrid attack against Georgia, and they are apparently calling their weapon in to prime it once again…

This confirms Brussels’ immature policy; they are acting like children. Whether it is Brussels itself or the EU ambassador—the way they behave. At times I can hardly believe my eyes seeing what we are dealing with. And these people claim to be a global player? That is precisely why they have been sidelined from serious international negotiations. They plead to be included in talks on the war between Ukraine and Russia. Neither Russia nor America has any interest in a dialogue involving them. Through their own immaturity, they have brought upon themselves everything that is happening to them now,” Papuashvili stated.
