Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stated that Yerevan will support Georgia’s European integration aspirations. According to him, the neighboring country’s success is important not only in its own right, but also for how Armenian citizens perceive the prospects of their own country’s European path.
Pashinyan made the remarks in an interview with Euronews on the sidelines of the EU enlargement summit in Brussels, responding to a concluding question about what specific commitment Armenia could make regarding the prospect of accession to the European Union.
“We will support Georgia with all our strength in realizing its European aspirations, since Georgia is a candidate country,” Pashinyan said.
He explained that Armenia’s decision to initiate the EU accession process was driven, among other factors, by Georgia’s example and its drive to become a full-fledged member of the European Union.
“To be honest, in deciding to approve the bill to initiate Armenia’s accession process to the European Union, we were inspired by the EU’s decision and Georgia’s determination to become a full member of the European community,” the prime minister said.
According to him, the trajectory of Georgia’s European course has direct significance for Armenian society.
“For Armenia, Georgia’s success is very important, including in terms of how citizens perceive our European policy and our European prospects,” Pashinyan emphasized.
During his visit to the EU, the Armenian prime minister also briefly responded to a question from Georgian journalist Tamar Nutsubidze (Euroscope) regarding how he views Georgia’s European integration process. Pashinyan replied: “Together.”
