Tbilisi City Hall has responded to photos circulating on social media and news outlets showing overflowing trash bins, explaining that the issue was caused by changes to the schedule of garbage trucks operated by Tbilservice Group (the municipal cleaning and public works service), the Netgazeti news outlet reports.
“This was a one-day test run prompted by numerous calls to the capital’s City Hall hotline, in which citizens expressed dissatisfaction with the movement of garbage trucks during rush hours. It was precisely in response to residents’ requests and to avoid traffic jams that waste collection was carried out on an experimental schedule throughout the day yesterday,” City Hall said in a statement.
According to municipal authorities, the test allowed them to evaluate the actual effectiveness of shifting the schedule, and Tbilservice Group will continue collecting waste under its previous timetable.
“The test once again demonstrated that, unfortunately, Tbilisi residents do not dispose of waste in the evening hours, but rather in the morning, which leads to bins overflowing in the first half of the day. We remind everyone that across the entire capital, trash bins are emptied three times a day, depending on the districts and neighborhoods. In addition, the process is continuously monitored along dedicated inspection routes,” City Hall stated, urging the public to dispose of household waste in the evening.
