EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stated that the European Commission, together with EU member states, will hold a thorough discussion on Georgia in January 2027. She noted, however, that differing opinions exist among member states.
“In January, together with the foreign ministers, we will discuss the issue of Georgia—how best to support the people and their aspiration for European Union membership,” Kaja Kallas said on November 4, the day the European Commission’s critical report on Georgia was published.
She reiterated that the government in Tbilisi is currently “on a collision course with the EU due to a rollback in democratic processes,” and that “it is evident that no steps are being taken in the right direction.”
Responding to journalists’ questions regarding potential additional measures, Kaja Kallas said, “It is too early to say anything yet,” adding that this would be precisely the subject of the discussions in January.
“There are differing opinions. For us, the main thing is to respond in a way that clearly demonstrates support for the people of Georgia and does not turn away from those who want the country to join the EU. At the same time, we must send an unequivocal signal to the leadership that we do not support such a course.”
Kallas also added that “at this moment, absolutely all options remain on the table.”
