Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O’Flaherty has met with the Public Defender (Ombudsman) of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani.
One of the issues discussed by the parties was the situation of individuals detained during pro-European protests, opposition politicians, and journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, the founder of Batumelebi.
Ioseliani noted that the meeting was important and the conversation focused on the state of human rights in Georgia.
“He was interested in the processes I am involved in as the Public Defender, as well as the report I presented to parliament—we discussed this report. Several issues were highlighted, including the situation of our citizens living along the occupation line.
The situation of people detained as a result of the protests, who are currently in detention facilities, was also discussed. At the same time, questions were raised about whether those who may have been responsible for beating people have been held accountable.
In addition, one of the issues was the general state of organizations in Georgia, as well as recent legislative changes adopted by parliament.
Overall, we spoke about everything, including the detained politicians. He was interested in their situation, as well as the condition of journalist Mzia Amaglobeli and her health in custody. We provided all the information on every issue we are involved in and have worked on,” Ioseliani stated.
The Ombudsman also reported that one of the topics of conversation was the amendments made to the Law on Grants, the Code of Administrative Offenses, and other laws.
He expressed hope that the partnership cooperation, which has lasted for two years, will continue.
“He visited last year, and he came this year, and I believe this is right. The state of human rights is important to him not only in Georgia but in general. From here, he travels to other countries. I welcome his visit because when I go to Strasbourg, I always try to meet with him and discuss issues that are common to us,” stated Levan Ioseliani.
Earlier, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O’Flaherty held a meeting with representatives of non-governmental organizations.
