Recluse Monk Nikoloz Found Dead in His Apartment

0

Nariman Makarashvili, also known as Monk Nikoloz (Nariman), has been found dead in his apartment.

Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported that an investigation is underway under Article 115 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to incitement to suicide.

Monk Nikoloz lived in Tbilisi and presented himself as a clergyman. He had established a circle of followers who believed in his ability to heal and perform miracles.

The official Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC) did not recognize him; according to open sources, he was excommunicated from the GOC in 2016.

Nevertheless, he maintained a group of devoted supporters who would gather outside his home, pray, and wait for “messages” from him.

Nariman Makarashvili led a solitary life, living as a recluse in his apartment. He also observed a vow of silence, communicating with those who came to his house through written notes.

Neighbors had repeatedly complained about his behavior, as well as the large crowds that gathered near the building.

For some—specifically his followers—he was a spiritual leader and wonderworker. For others, he raised doubts and was perceived as a representative of a pseudo-religious movement.
