The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the Mossad intelligence service, and the Shin Bet security agency have confirmed the identification of a network in Azerbaijan, operating with the support of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which was preparing attacks on strategic facilities.
Among the targets was the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, which serves as a strategic energy asset for Georgia and is the second-longest pipeline in the world.
The terrorists’ targets also included Jewish infrastructure in Azerbaijan and diplomatic facilities.
The sabotage plot was thwarted as a result of a special operation conducted by Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies.
According to the investigation, the detained individuals possessed drones equipped with explosive devices, as well as various types of ammunition that had been illegally smuggled into the country.
Israeli security forces stated that the group members acted on instructions received from Iran and were also engaged in reconnaissance activities to prepare for the attacks.
Israeli intelligence agencies claim that the identified network was preparing more than just a single operation and had other strategic targets in its plans. According to their data, cooperation with international partners will continue to prevent further threats.
The investigation asserts that additional targets for the attacks included the Israeli Embassy in Azerbaijan, a leader of the Jewish community, and the Ashkenazi synagogue in Azerbaijan.
As part of the case, eight Azerbaijani citizens detained in connection with the plot confessed to acting under the direction of individuals linked to Iran.
As a reminder, on March 5, 2026, a drone attack was launched from Iranian territory against the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, damaging the airport and wounding two people.
