The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia has issued an official statement regarding a meeting between Minister Maka Bochorishvili and EU Ambassador Pawel Herczynski, following remarks made at an event dedicated to Georgia at the European External Action Service in Brussels.
“During the meeting, the Minister emphasized that Brussels’ current policy toward Georgia, as well as the steps taken and statements made regarding the country, undermine trust between the parties and negatively impact the partnership between Georgia and the EU.
Regrettably, Brussels’ actions can only be assessed as contributing to further polarization of Georgian society and encouraging the radicalization of the political agenda.
The Minister also noted that the Georgian government consistently demonstrates its readiness for constructive dialogue and expects an approach from the European Union based on fairness and mutual respect,” the ministry stated.
Foreign Minister vs. EU Ambassador: Georgia needs neither a “dark past” nor such threats
As a reminder, EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski spoke in Brussels about the prospects for Georgia’s European future, which was met with criticism by the Georgian authorities: Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze deemed it appropriate to summon the diplomat to the Georgian MFA.
EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski stated that Georgia is “at a crossroads” and its future depends on the choices made by the authorities and society. The diplomat also noted a risk of deviating from the European path and that the EU is concerned about Georgia’s democratic backsliding. He urged Georgian society not to lose its European perspective.
“Georgia stands at a crossroads. The country’s future is not yet determined, but the decisions made in the coming weeks and months will determine whether Georgia becomes part of the European family of nations, based on democracy, the rule of law, and human rights, or, unfortunately, returns to its dark past,” the diplomat stated.
