The Holy Synod has selected three candidates for the patriarchal throne. According to the Synod’s decision, the candidates for the post of patriarch will be the Locum Tenens (acting head) of the patriarchal throne, Shio, Metropolitan Iov, and Metropolitan Grigoliy.
Today, the date was also announced for the extended assembly at which the name of the next Primate of the Georgian Orthodox Church will be revealed.
It is reported that the new Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia must be elected by May 15, 2026.
The Holy Synod currently consists of 39 hierarchs. Thirty-eight hierarchs participated in today’s meeting; Metropolitan Zosima (Shioshvili) of Tsilkani and Dusheti was absent. The Patriarchate did not disclose the reason for the 74-year-old metropolitan’s absence, but Radio Liberty reported that it was due to health issues.
