Salome Zourabichvili: Farmers prohibited from planting vineyards on their own land

The fifth President of Georgia has commented on the amendments to the Law “On Wine and Grapes” that have come into force, according to which establishing a vineyard for commercial purposes will require the consent of the National Wine Agency and the acquisition of a corresponding permit.

As Salome Zourabichvili wrote on social media, this law is aimed at the destruction of Georgian agriculture.

“May 1st will go down in our history as a shameful date: as of today, farmers are prohibited from planting vineyards on their own land without government permission, as well as from selling the grapes they grow and the wine produced from them.

In other words, we have returned to the era of Shah Abbas or the Soviet Union, when private plots were permitted only for personal consumption.

This law is directly aimed at the destruction of Georgian agriculture and will lead to the disappearance of farmers or their departure from the country!” Zourabichvili writes.
