Georgian PM: EU Criticism Driven by Political Interests, Not Reality in Georgia

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has commented on a statement by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, who asserted that the Georgian government is moving in the wrong direction.

Kobakhidze reiterated that over the past four years, there have been five different attempts to organize a revolution in Georgia involving externally funded actors. He noted that this was the reason for the adoption of specific laws concerning media and NGOs in the country.

The Prime Minister stated that this is the reality—the Georgian authorities had to protect the country’s national interests from foreign interference, “and we have done so successfully; we protected our country’s national interests.”

He added that such remarks are unfortunate and unfair.

“Otherwise, it is sad; such statements are, of course, unfair. We hope that in the future, such statements will be replaced by fair ones,” Kobakhidze said.

Responding to a question about why the authorities are struggling to convince their partners and why criticism persists, Kobakhidze stated that “when crude political interest is present, arguments do not work.”

According to Kobakhidze, there is a specific political interest that started it all—a direct demand to enter the war against the Russian Federation, which he noted was voiced at a specific meeting. This was followed, he claimed, by blackmail against the Georgian people and government that has continued throughout these years.

“When there is crude political interest, arguments are ineffective; only pure political interests apply, and specific individuals are attempting to use the European bureaucracy to advance these interests,” he emphasized.

Kobakhidze also pointed out that Georgia maintains a dialogue with everyone regarding domestic events, regional developments, and how relations with other countries should evolve.

“This is politics, and unfortunately, there is a lot of dirt in politics, including in Europe. It is important to change this situation. Unfortunately, the current environment is one where misguided interests often dominate regarding Georgia. If this changes, the situation will improve,” the Prime Minister stated.
