Georgian MFA: European Parliament report is detached from reality, it is blackmail

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has sharply criticized a report on Georgia adopted by the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs. The ministry stated that the document is “completely detached from reality,” contains distortions of facts, “absurd accusations,” and elements of manipulation, and spreads disinformation, thereby damaging the reputation of the European Parliament.

The report in question was prepared by the rapporteur on Georgia, Lithuanian MEP Rasa Juknevičienė, as part of the European Commission’s assessment for 2025.

“The report is completely detached from reality through the deliberate distortion of facts, absurd accusations, and the use of information manipulation techniques. It disseminates disinformation, thereby damaging the reputation of the European Parliament and undermining the trust of Georgian society in the European Union and its institutions, which is reflected in public sentiment and the justified protest of political circles.

The use of EU institutions for targeted attacks on the Georgian state, democratic institutions, Georgian society, and values—including the Georgian Orthodox Church, which grossly insults the religious feelings of the people—is a cause for concern.

The report represents another attempt to polarize Georgian society, alienate the democratically elected government from the people, and encourage anti-democratic processes and radical sentiments. Blackmail and threats against Georgian society are unacceptable; they constitute interference in the country’s internal politics and cause justified concern for any sovereign state,” the ministry’s statement reads.

Official Tbilisi emphasizes the inadmissibility of using the issue of European integration as a political tool and setting conditions that affect national security issues and the risks of escalation in the region.

MEP: Georgian authorities have effectively failed EU membership criteria

“The instrumentalization of Georgia’s foreign policy priorities and geopolitical issues, the use of the European integration process as a political tool, and attempts to set preconditions in the EU accession process that are directly linked to the country’s national security and the creation of additional risks of escalation in the region are unacceptable.

Such unfair treatment by an EU institution undermines relations between Georgia and the European Union and damages our common interests,” the statement continues.

Despite the criticism, the Georgian MFA confirmed its readiness for cooperation with the EU, noting that the country remains a “responsible and committed partner” and expects a “constructive and fair approach” based on mutual respect, trust, and shared values.

Notably, on May 5, the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted the report on Georgia. 53 MEPs voted in favor of the annual report, while 14 voted against.
