“Georgia does not need to be shown the path to Europe” — Shalva Papuashvili’s letter to the EU Ambassador

The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, believes that the people of Georgia do not need to be shown the path to Europe, as Georgia itself is a co-creator of European civilization. He expressed this in a letter addressed to the European Union Ambassador, Paweł Herczyński.

“European unity was not achieved, and we ended up with war; the current actions of the EU leadership show that it does not realize this fundamental conclusion of the Schuman Declaration. Current EU policy leaves no room for any explanation other than that it is aimed at deepening confrontation and intensifying divisions.

Unjust and politically motivated resolutions of the European Parliament, numerous threats of political and economic retaliation, and constant interference in Georgia’s internal affairs are just a few examples of purposeful attempts to incite confrontation both within Georgia and in relations between Georgia and the EU.

A truly united Europe is one that not only prevents future wars but also brings current conflicts to an end. However, unfortunately, Brussels’ policy toward Georgia shows no intention of achieving unity between the Georgian people and the European Union.

‘Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan,’ Robert Schuman stated in his famous declaration. Unfortunately, today we see these wise words of Schuman being ignored, and EU policy is being carried out based on narrow political interests and false, artificially created ideologies that ignore Europe’s cultural richness, ideological diversity, and political pluralism. The attempt to impose political and ideological frameworks on Georgia on its path to European integration is also a prime example of this narrow, fruitless, and superficial policy.

The Georgian people do not need to be shown the European path. Georgia itself is a co-creator of European civilization, and therefore, where Georgia is, Europe is. European integration should not mean the unilateral dominance of Brussels over Georgia, but should become a genuine strengthening of our historical ties with other European nations, as equals.

Europe Day should also remind us that no EU leadership can cancel European ideals such as national independence, Christian values, and a traditional way of life, simply because they hold different ideological views.

It is precisely the inconsistency with this fundamental spirit of the EU that is demonstrated by those who are too preoccupied with plans for so-called ‘regime change’ against democratically elected authorities, who impose ideologies incompatible with human nature, and who, ignoring differences in traditions, attempt to implement a uniform way of life.

The idea of creating the European Coal and Steel Community, presented by Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950, was aimed at ‘raising the standard of living and preserving achievements.’ He understood perfectly well that peace requires a solid economic foundation. The entire European project was built on this very idea.

However, today the EU leadership seems to have forgotten this basic principle as well. How else can one explain the persistent calls to participate in economic confrontation with Russia without offering any security guarantees or economic support? Following these calls would lead not only to Georgia’s economic collapse but also to regional instability, leaving Europe without vital energy resources and geo-economic routes,” Papuashvili noted.
