The State Security Service of Georgia (SSG) has released a video recording related to the so-called espionage case.
“The footage shows the citizen detained on espionage charges receiving instructions, accepting funds, and signing a corresponding document during a clandestine meeting,” according to information released by the SSG.
As a reminder, Giorgi Udzilauri, who served as the head of public relations for Bidzina Ivanishvili’s Cartu Group, was detained on May 5.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, an investigation conducted by the Counterintelligence Department of the State Security Service established that the civil servant, who held a high-ranking position in a government institution, systematically collected and transmitted various types and categories of information to foreign intelligence on their instructions for financial gain and to the detriment of Georgia’s interests.
He has been charged under Article 314 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (espionage), which carries a penalty of up to 12 years in prison.
The City Court ordered Giorgi Udzilauri to be remanded in custody as a preventive measure. The case is classified as “top secret.”
