Badri Japaridze: Georgia Marks Europe Day Amid Grave Political Challenges

0

Badri Japaridze, one of the leaders of “Lelo – Strong Georgia,” shared a message on social media dedicated to Europe Day, which is celebrated in Georgia on May 9:

“Today we celebrate Europe Day – a day associated with the ideals of freedom, peace, dignity, and multinational unity based on shared values.

The 1950 Schuman Declaration laid the foundation for the creation of a European union that chose cooperation over confrontation, collective security over intimidation, and unity over isolation. It is upon these ideas that the modern European Union stands – a union where individual freedom, the rule of law, and democracy are the primary values. The hallmarks of this unique union are lasting peace and the prosperity of its citizens.

In 2026, Georgia marks Europe Day amid grave political challenges. While the vast majority of society supports a European future, the actions of the ‘Georgian Dream’ (the ruling party) government are creating increasing obstacles to seizing the historic opportunity that would allow Georgia to join the next wave of EU enlargement. Pressure continues on free media, civil society, and dissent, accompanied by aggressive and insulting rhetoric toward European partners, which primarily harms the interests of the Georgian people and our country.

The Georgian people have proven time and again that they do not intend to abandon the country’s freedom, its European choice, and a dignified future.

Therefore, I believe that nothing can stand against the will of the Georgian people, and Georgia will return to the path of European integration – becoming a strong, democratic, and full member of the European family!” Badri Japaridze wrote.
