The Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Shio III, has stated that the tradition of mass baptisms introduced by his predecessor, Ilia II, will continue in the country. He made the announcement during a sermon at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi.
The new head of the GOC (Georgian Orthodox Church) noted that this practice has played a vital role in the spiritual strengthening of society and has contributed to demographic growth.
Shio III recalled that this year Georgia is celebrating the Day of Family Holiness for the first time without Ilia II, who established the holiday. Despite this, he said, the tradition continues to preserve the spiritual legacy of the late Patriarch.
He emphasized that Ilia II attached great importance to the protection of moral values, and the holiday itself symbolizes respect for family and parents.
“This year we are observing this day for the first time without him; however, the celebration continues to bring to life his great spiritual legacy—love, unity, and respect for the sanctity of the family,” Shio III noted.
The Patriarch added that the tradition of mass baptisms will be continued as part of the church life and spiritual course of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
