Mayor of Tbilisi on Potential Break in Relations with Saarbrücken: “It Is Their Right”

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, commenting on an article in the Saarbrücker Zeitung, stated that the German side’s decision to terminate official contacts is their right and they are free to act as they see fit.

After 51 years of sister-city relations with Tbilisi, the city of Saarbrücken plans to sever all official ties with the Georgian capital.

Kaladze stated that he had had no communication with the German side until this point.

“It is their right—let them do as they see fit. I have been the mayor of the city since 2017, and there has been no communication. A delegation visited once for ‘Tbilisoba’ [an annual October festival celebrating the city],” Kaladze replied.

As a reminder, according to the Saarbrücker Zeitung, the German city of Saarbrücken intends to end all official ties with Tbilisi after 51 years of sisterhood.

According to the publication, a draft resolution proposed by the office of Mayor Uwe Conradt will be submitted to a meeting of the Saarbrücken City Council on May 19. The mayor recommends suspending all contacts with its sister city, Tbilisi, until further notice.

The author writes that such a radical decision is attributed to “serious reasons” related to current political events in Georgia.
