Russia seeks to create a “Putin road” through Georgia, modeled after the “Trump route”

A proposal has been made in Russia to establish a “Russian President Vladimir Putin road” to Armenia. This was announced by Vladislav Gasumyanov, director of the National Research Institute for Development of Communications (NIIRK), at the international conference “Russia and the World: Dialogues – 2026. New Reality,” as reported by the Lenta.ru news outlet.

“If there is a ‘[US President Donald] Trump road’ from Azerbaijan to Turkey, why can’t there be a ‘Putin road’ from Russia, through Abkhazia and Georgia to Armenia?” Gasumyanov stated.

The Tenth International Scientific and Practical Conference “Russia and the World: Dialogues – 2026. New Reality” took place in Moscow on May 20. Among other events, the forum featured a session titled “The South Caucasus and Russia: Dialogue in a New Reality.”

As for the “Trump Road,” plans for its implementation became known in August 2025. As part of a peace agreement concluded between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Yerevan and Washington agreed to establish the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP). The project is designed to unblock regional transport links—the road is to run through Armenian territory, connecting the main territory of Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave. Yerevan has granted the United States exclusive rights to develop the transit zone for a 99-year term.
