18 MEPs Call for Scrutiny of Imedi TV Channel’s Operations

Eighteen Members of the European Parliament have called on EU institutions to assess the activities of the sanctioned Georgian pro-government TV channel Imedi and its associated entities in the context of potential disinformation and public opinion manipulation campaigns.

The appeal notes that Imedi’s narratives often closely mirror Kremlin disinformation methods. In this regard, the MEPs call on the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the Council to conduct an official legal assessment of Imedi’s operations to determine further measures.

“These narratives often closely mirror established Kremlin disinformation methods: portraying the EU as a threat to national sovereignty, discrediting civil society as foreign-controlled, attacking independent institutions, and presenting democratic reforms or European integration as a source of instability.

The role of the Imedi TV channel in this ecosystem is of particular concern. Monitoring confirms messaging aimed at undermining trust in the EU, weakening Georgia’s European path, and polarizing the information space—the exact same foreign information manipulation tactics observed in other countries in the region.”

The document was signed by MEPs from the following political groups: the European People’s Party, the European Conservatives and Reformists, the Socialists and Democrats, the Greens, and the Liberals.

It should also be noted that on May 14, the European Parliament banned the Georgian pro-government television company Imedi from operating inside the EU legislature’s building for one year.

Prior to this, the TV channel received an official warning from Brussels, which stated that its journalists had violated the European Parliament’s code of conduct, specifically by recording MEPs without their consent.
