The European Union has sent a letter to Georgia’s “Opposition Alliance” addressing the current developments in the country. The authors state that democratic backsliding in Georgia continues, with no signs of improvement in sight.
The document emphasizes that the EU’s doors remain open to Tbilisi should it return to the path of democratic development and European integration.
“Georgia remains high on our agenda. On April 21, the Foreign Affairs Council reviewed the steadily deteriorating situation in Georgia and discussed EU pressure in response to the ongoing democratic backsliding.
The High Representative emphasized that there are no signs of improvement, and the ministers sent a clear signal – the Georgian government must change its course of action.”
The statement also notes that the European Union is actively countering disinformation narratives spread by representatives and high-ranking officials of “Georgian Dream.” The letter concludes by stating that:
“The European Union stands ready to support the European aspirations of the Georgian people and the country’s path toward EU membership, should the Georgian authorities decide to change their current course.”
