Man Attacked by Police in Gori Released and Sent for Forensic Medical Examination

Papuna Lotsulashvili, who was attacked by police officers in Gori, has been released. Lawyer Lasha Tkesheladze stated that he learned from law enforcement officers that the detainee had been freed and sent for a forensic medical examination.

“I was told verbally that he was released and sent for an examination. I have not seen any documents; this will become completely clear after the examination. At the moment, I have been informed that he has been released,” Tkesheladze stated.

The lawyer noted that he does not know on what grounds the decision to release him was made, but the information was conveyed to him both from the detention facility and by the law enforcement officers themselves.

It was previously reported that the man was detained under Article 353 of the Criminal Code of Georgia — for resisting police officers using threats of violence in order to obstruct their work.

Lawyer: My client, who was beaten by police, has been detained in Gori

As a reminder, in Gori, in the so-called “Kombinat” district, a group of law enforcement officers used physical force against two men. The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has launched an investigation into the alleged abuse of power by the police.

One of the participants in the incident in Gori, Lasha Abisonashvili, recounted how the conflict with the police began, after which, according to him, he and his friend were beaten.

The man stated that the altercation began after a police car started following his friend, who was walking on foot during a break at work.

According to Abisonashvili, he tried to help his friend but ended up being beaten as well.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia stated that it has launched an investigation into the case of violence committed by employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia against a citizen.

The lawyer of Papuna Lotsulashvili — Lasha Tkesheladze — stated that his client was detained under the article on violence against a police officer (Article 353 of the Criminal Code of Georgia), which, according to him, is “complete cynicism and something unimaginable,” because the detainee himself had been beaten and injured.
