Tbilisi Mayor and Secretary General of the Georgian Dream party Kakha Kaladze announced that the Tbilisi Development Fund is launching the restoration of Sioni Cathedral. The work, which will repair the church’s roof and bell tower, is scheduled for completion by the end of October.
The mayor stated that a contract with the contractor has already been signed.
“For our city, having monuments with cultural heritage status is a great asset. We have already implemented several important projects in this area. This time, the Tbilisi Development Fund is launching the restoration project of Sioni Cathedral.
Currently, the church’s roof and bell tower are damaged, allowing precipitation to degrade the walls and pose a threat to the frescoes inside the cathedral.
Accordingly, the restoration will target these specific parts of the church. The bidding process has concluded, the winning company has been selected, and a contract has already been signed with them,” Kaladze stated.
As a reminder, on March 22, 2026, the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II, who passed away late on the evening of March 17 at the age of 93, was buried in Sioni Cathedral. Starting March 18, his public farewell ceremonies were held in another cathedral, Sameba. Thousands of citizens paid their respects to His Holiness.
