The State Security Service of Georgia (SGB) has detained an individual on espionage charges. As the Deputy Head of the SGB, Lasha Magradze, announced at a press conference, the detainee was linked to the intelligence services of two foreign states. The accused is the founder and head of a non-governmental organization.
“The investigation has established that, over many years, the founder and head of a non-governmental organization systematically gathered and transmitted intelligence to foreign security services for financial gain and to promote the interests of foreign states.
The detainee maintained regular, highly covert contact with representatives of foreign intelligence services. The transmission of information was carried out both during face-to-face meetings and through electronic communication channels. In addition, to maintain secrecy and receive briefings, meetings were periodically held outside the country.
On the instructions and with the funding of foreign intelligence services, the accused created information platforms and organized various events across the country to carry out these activities.
Notably, the accused simultaneously cooperated with the intelligence services of two foreign states, conducting parallel espionage activities.
The investigation is being conducted under Part 1 of Article 314 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carries a penalty of 8 to 12 years of imprisonment,” Lasha Magradze stated.
