Russian Foreign Ministry links Rtskhiladze’s detention to Russophobia monitoring project

Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MID), commented on the detention in Tbilisi of Gulbaat Rtskhiladze, the head of the “Eurasia Institute” NGO, on espionage charges. Speaking to journalists, Zakharova stated that Rtskhiladze had for many years openly advocated for the normalization of Russian-Georgian relations and contributed to the development of humanitarian ties between the two countries.

According to her, he was engaged in studying the shared historical heritage of the two nations, participated in memorial projects related to searching for those killed during World War II, restoring monuments, and preserving the historical memory of the Georgian people’s contribution to the victory over fascism.

The representative of the Russian foreign ministry also pointed out that the detention took place a few days after the announcement of a project to monitor Russophobia in Georgia’s public space. According to Zakharova, certain forces may be interested in concealing information about manifestations of xenophobia.

“We cannot but be concerned about his fate,” — the diplomat stated, adding that Rtskhiladze has a seriously ill elderly father in his care. At the same time, she emphasized that Russia respects the sovereignty and legislation of Georgia and hopes that the Georgian authorities will resolve the situation.

Gulbaat Rtskhiladze was detained by the State Security Service of Georgia on May 30. He has been charged under the article on espionage, an offense that carries a penalty of up to 12 years in prison.

According to the investigation, the accused cooperated with the intelligence services of two foreign states and carried out parallel intelligence activities. The investigation is ongoing.
