European Commission: Actions of Georgian authorities undermine foundations of visa-free regime

European Commission (EC) spokesperson Markus Lammert has commented on the upcoming June 11 meeting between representatives of the Georgian government and Brussels regarding the visa-free regime for Georgian citizens.

He recalled that in March 2026, the EC suspended the visa-free regime for one year for Georgian citizens holding diplomatic and service passports.

Lammert explained that when a visa-free agreement is suspended, the EC initiates a process with the respective third country known as “enhanced dialogue.”

“Its goal is to address the circumstances that led to the suspension. In this context, the first meeting between the European Commission and a delegation of official representatives of Georgia will take place on June 11. This is precisely what the meeting will be dedicated to,” the EU official explained.

Lammert noted that the European Commission considers the actions of the Georgian authorities to be undermining the principles on which visa liberalization is based. He pointed out that these are the respect for human rights and democratic principles.

“These actions are incompatible with the norms and values of the European Union and hinder the stable development of economic, humanitarian, cultural, scientific, and other ties between the EU and Georgia,” Lammert stated.
