“For Georgia”: Moscow Strengthens Control over Occupied Tskhinvali

Russia has initiated a new phase of annexing Georgian territory in the occupied Tskhinvali region, according to a statement by the “For Georgia” party published on social media. The opposition political alliance points out that the agreement signed in May between Moscow and the de facto authorities of Tskhinvali on deepening allied cooperation has entered into force, and its provisions are already being implemented in practice.

“This is evidenced by the personnel policy pursued by Russia in the occupied territory. Specifically, Russia has dispatched Russian official Marat Kambolov to occupied Tskhinvali; he was initially appointed as an advisor to the de facto president, and now, according to media reports, there are plans to appoint him to the position of ‘prime minister’ of the Tskhinvali occupying regime.

As is well known, the aforementioned so-called treaty is aimed at the complete integration of the socio-economic, transport, energy, and military spheres of the occupied Tskhinvali region with the Russian Federation. This clearly represents another step toward the de facto annexation of Georgian territories and directly threatens the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

We called on the Georgian authorities to take appropriate legislative measures and mobilize international partners against this new wave of annexation, but the “Dream” [Georgian Dream] government did nothing. The ruling party did not even support the resolution condemning the annexation that we initiated in parliament, and dismissed our efforts in this direction as ‘political posturing’.

Against the backdrop of the “Dream” party’s complete inaction, Russia is already appointing its own civil servant to a leadership position in the Tskhinvali regime, which signifies the establishment of direct rule by Moscow over the occupied territory of Georgia.

The “Dream” party, which has deliberately sabotaged Georgia’s years-long cooperation with strategic partners and led the country into international isolation, is facilitating the annexation of our territories by the occupying state through its criminal silence, instead of defending national interests.

We call on the “Dream” party to fulfill its constitutional obligations—to provide a clear political and legal assessment of the annexation processes carried out by Russia in the occupied territories, and to ensure the mobilization of international partners against the annexation.

We also demand that the “Dream” authorities clearly state their position regarding the occupying regime’s claims to the village of Chorchana and clarify whether they plan to dismantle the Georgian checkpoint stationed there.

Once again, we appeal to the parliament and government of Georgia: end the silence, return to the constitutional framework, restore active engagement with international partners, and support the resolution against annexation. Silence and inaction during Russia’s seizure of Georgian territories amount to aiding the occupying state, and no one will be able to escape responsibility for this,” the statement reads.
