Sopho Khorguani, an MP from the “For Georgia” parliamentary faction, has called on the Defense and Security Committee of the Parliament of Georgia to urgently hold a meeting regarding the recent developments in the Tskhinvali region. According to her, against the backdrop of the government’s inaction on de-occupation, Russia has launched a new phase of the de facto annexation of Georgian territories.
“The so-called ‘treaty on deepening alliance integration,’ signed in May between Moscow and the Tskhinvali regime, has entered into force, and its practical implementation has begun.
This is evidenced by Russia’s personnel policy in the occupied territory. In particular, Russia has sent Russian official Marat Kambolov to Tskhinvali; he was initially appointed as an advisor to the de facto president, and now, according to media reports, there are plans to appoint him to the position of ‘prime minister’ of the Tskhinvali occupation regime.
This treaty is aimed at the complete integration of the socio-economic, transport, energy, and military spheres of the occupied Tskhinvali region with the Russian Federation, which represents another step toward the de facto annexation of Georgian territories and poses a direct threat to the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Representatives of the ‘Georgian Dream’ government talk a lot about how our sovereignty is stronger today than ever before. However, in practice, this is primarily reflected in the deterioration of relations with strategic partners and attacks on the German Ambassador.
The state must perform its duties. In a parliamentary republic, it is the parliament that determines the country’s domestic and foreign policy.
Therefore, as a representative of the parliamentary opposition, an MP of the ‘For Georgia’ faction, and a member of the committee, I appeal to the Defense and Security Committee of the Parliament of Georgia with a demand to immediately convene a meeting and put the issue of the recent developments in the occupied Tskhinvali region on the agenda.
During the consideration of this issue, the committee must explore the possibilities of using legal, diplomatic, and political mechanisms, including engaging international partners in addressing the ongoing annexation and seeking other legal avenues of response.
Naturally, authorized and competent representatives of the relevant state agencies must be invited to the meeting.
The state must be functional and genuinely protect the interests of the Georgian people, as well as the country’s sovereignty,” Sopho Khorguani stated.
