“The post by the third president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, came as a surprise and is regrettable,” stated Tina Bokuchava, chairwoman of the United National Movement party, at a press conference. According to her, such “impulsive and inconsistent decisions” have previously led to the current situation.
She recalled that six days ago, Mikheil Saakashvili published a post in which he supported her as party chair to carry out the necessary reforms.
According to Bokuchava, her two-year term of office, to which she was elected at the party congress in July 2024, expires in about a month. Despite political differences, she emphasized that the struggle for the release of political prisoners and the “victory of the country” will continue.
“This does not mean we will stop even for a minute. We will fight for the health and life of Elene Khoshtaria, for her release, for the freedom of President Saakashvili, for the release of all political prisoners, and for the victory of this country,” Bokuchava added.
As a reminder, Mikheil Saakashvili previously stated on social media that his candidate for the post of party chair is journalist Nanuka Zhorzholiani, and proposed holding elections open to all interested candidates without external interference.
