Teacher from Gali sentenced in Abkhazia to 6 years and 9 months on espionage charges

A de facto court in Abkhazia has sentenced Shalva Khizanishvili, a teacher from Gali detained on espionage charges, to six years and nine months in prison.

In addition to espionage, Khizanishvili was also charged with the illegal acquisition, possession, and carrying of firearms, ammunition, and explosive devices.

According to the so-called investigative authorities, the 39-year-old man filmed one of the Russian border posts stationed in Abkhazia, for which he received a monetary reward. It is also alleged that an explosive device was subsequently handed over to him.

Khizanishvili was detained on October 1, 2025.
