Georgia plans to reduce speeding fines

Amendments are planned to the Code of Administrative Offenses regarding liability for speeding, according to parliamentary majority leader Irakli Kirtskhalia. The proposed system of sanctions will become more differentiated and proportional, he stated.

Under the changes, the fine for speeding by more than 15 km/h but not more than 30 km/h will be reduced from 100 to 50 lari. For exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 km/h but not more than 40 km/h, the fine will remain unchanged at 100 lari. Speeding by 40–50 km/h will be penalized with a fine of 100 lari instead of the current 300 lari. Meanwhile, the existing fine of 300 lari will remain in place for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h.

“This approach will ensure proportionality between the severity of the violation and the measure of liability, while strict sanctions for the most dangerous violations — speeding by more than 50 km/h — will remain in force,” Kirtskhalia noted.

He also emphasized that the authorities will continue to propose new legislative changes.
