Ivane Chkhaidze: Viruses causing mild respiratory illnesses predominate

Currently, viruses causing mild and uncomplicated illnesses predominate in Georgia: human metapneumovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, and adenovirus. These viruses most commonly cause the common cold and cold-like symptoms. This was reported to the InterpressNews agency by Ivane Chkhaidze, Medical Director of the Iashvili Central Children’s Hospital and Professor at Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU).

“At the primary healthcare level, cases of influenza B have been recorded among patients with mild pneumonia. In hospitals, however, among patients with severe acute respiratory viral infections, cases of coronavirus infection, rather than influenza, are being detected.

No increase in people seeking medical attention has been observed. On the contrary, the number of consultations is gradually decreasing. We expect this figure to decline even further in July and August.

As for the coronavirus, unlike the previous period, laboratory-confirmed cases have been recorded in Georgia over the past three weeks.

As I have already noted, in cases with a more severe course of the illness, coronavirus infections were recorded in hospitals. The figures are not yet high, but they indicate that the coronavirus continues to circulate,” Ivane Chkhaidze stated.
