Geostat has presented the results of the 2024 population census. Gogita Todradze, Head of the National Statistics Office of Georgia, stated that 96.1% of Georgia’s population, or 3.775 million people, are citizens of the country, including 8,865 individuals with dual citizenship.
According to the statistics agency, the share of foreign citizens stands at 3.4% of the population, or approximately 134,000 people.
Todradze noted that compared to the 2014 census data, the population of Tbilisi has increased by 20%.
Georgia maintains a high level of urbanization: 62% of the population live in urban areas, while 38% reside in rural areas. Over the past ten years, the share of the urban population has grown by 5%.
Tbilisi, Batumi, Adjara, Kvemo Kartli
Tbilisi is home to 34% of the country’s population. The population of the capital has reached 1.331 million people, which is 223,000 people, or 20% more, compared to the 2014 census.
Significant growth was also recorded in Batumi, where the population increased by 54% — from 153,000 to 236,000 people.
Aside from Tbilisi, population growth was also recorded in the Adjara Autonomous Republic and the Kvemo Kartli region.
Meanwhile, other regions of Georgia show a downward population trend. The most notable decline — is in the municipalities of mountainous Adjara, as well as in the municipalities of Tsageri, Tskaltubo, Tkibuli, and Lanchkhuti.
According to the census data, the number of Georgian citizens has increased by 2.5%, or by 91,000 people, over the past 10 years.
Among the foreign citizens permanently residing in the country, the largest groups are:
- citizens of Russia — 37.7 thousand people, which corresponds to approximately 1% of the country’s population;
- citizens of India — 23.9 thousand people (0.6%);
- citizens of Ukraine — 11.5 thousand;
- citizens of Azerbaijan — 8.3 thousand;
- citizens of Armenia — 5.4 thousand people.
According to the census, ethnic Georgians make up 84.1% of the country’s population, or 3.304 million people.
Their number has increased by 80,000 people, or 2.5%, over the past ten years.
Azerbaijanis are the second largest ethnic group, numbering 269,000 people and accounting for 6.8% of the population.
Armenians rank third with a share of 4.3%.
They are followed by Russians at 1.1% of the population, and Indians at 0.6%.
