The leader of the “For Georgia” party, Giorgi Gakharia, commented on the incident in parliament, stating that representatives of the ruling Georgian Dream party responded to the political opposition with “coordinated physical violence.” On June 27, during a parliamentary hearing on a report by Irakli Kobakhidze, a physical altercation broke out between members of Georgian Dream and MPs from the former prime minister’s party.
“We entered parliament so as not to leave citizens—including those who voted for Georgian Dream—alone with their problems and needs, and to use all parliamentary mechanisms to ensure government accountability and express an alternative point of view.
We have not backed down from this mission. Georgian Dream responded to the political opposition with coordinated physical violence. Our colleague Giga Parulava required medical assistance,” Gakharia wrote.
According to him, being in the opposition in Georgia today comes with risks to physical safety.
“This violence is enabled by the impunity enjoyed by individuals at the highest levels of power,” Gakharia stated.
