Georgia’s Minister of Education, Science, and Youth Affairs, Givi Mikanadze, announced that school uniforms will be introduced in phases this year. According to him, as early as September 15, all first-graders will arrive at school in the new uniform featuring the state coat of arms of Georgia, and by the end of the first semester, all students from grades one to six will be provided with the sets.
As the minister noted, the project is being implemented gradually to allow children to adjust to the new system. In subsequent years, the mandatory school uniform will be extended to older grades, with plans to add one grade to the program each year.
Parents will receive information in advance about distribution and sales points for the uniforms, which will be set up in both cities and regions, Mikanadze said.
“In the coming days, we will determine the cost of the school uniform—prices will be set for jackets, trousers, and skirts. I can state with full responsibility that it will be several times lower than the cost of uniforms in private schools…
Our goal was and remains to implement this project in cooperation with Georgian companies. However, after conducting market research and announcing an open-participation tender, the company recognized as the winner of the first stage of the study, unfortunately, failed to fully submit the documents required to conclude the contract. In accordance with legislation, this procedure did not take place.
The company with which we have signed the contract is a leading manufacturer of school uniforms in China and produces goods of the highest quality. The head of this company has already arrived in Georgia. Today, we held a meeting with him and received full guarantees regarding both product quality and compliance with delivery deadlines,” stated Givi Mikanadze.
