Austrian MFA: This is not a market — there will be no compromises for Georgia

Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger stated that there “will be no compromises” with the Georgian authorities, “especially on the issues of our fundamental values.” She pointed out that “this is not a market where your government can bargain, negotiate with us, and expect us to weaken our position on the rule of law or other fundamental values.”

“This will never happen!” Meinl-Reisinger declared.

Speaking at the ALDE congress in Vienna, Meinl-Reisinger stated that the citizens of Georgia had made a choice in favor of Europe, but, according to her, the government does not support this choice.

“We are interested in the European Union being based precisely on these values. If you can carry out the necessary reforms in this direction, we will be happy to conduct accession negotiations. If not, then I am truly sorry, but the country is moving in the wrong direction.

We believe that it is the government that must pave this path and secure it for its citizens. Obviously, what we are seeing now is that Georgia is moving in the wrong direction. The citizens chose Europe, but the government does not support this choice. We are witnessing a massive setback,” the politician stated.
