The Georgian national basketball team secured a crucial victory over Spain in the first round of the World Cup qualifiers. The match took place at the Korkia-Dzhordzhikia Arena in Tbilisi, with the hosts winning 91-89 in overtime.
During the match, the Georgian team trailed by 22 points but managed to stage an impressive comeback to defeat their opponents.
The star of the match was team captain Tornike Shengelia, who scored 37 points. This set a new record for the Georgian national team for the most points scored by a single player in an official match.
A significant contribution to the victory was also made by an American athlete who obtained Georgian citizenship — shooting guard Marquise Reed, who scored 32 points.
Thanks to this victory, the Georgian national team advanced to the second group stage of the qualifiers with three wins and three losses.
The team will continue its campaign for a spot in the World Cup, where they will face the top teams from the neighboring group.
