Georgia aims to eliminate unauthorized landfills by 2030. To achieve this, the country will build four modern regional landfills for non-hazardous waste and transfer stations. At these stations, waste will be collected and loaded into large trucks for further transport to the landfills.
The decree was signed by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
The modern landfills will meet contemporary environmental and technical standards. Their exact locations will be determined by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, which will also organize all necessary construction work.
The new facilities will serve four regions of the country:
- Kakheti;
- Shida Kartli and Mtskheta-Mtianeti;
- Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti;
- Samtskhe-Javakheti.
It is noted that the construction of modern municipal waste landfills will help reduce the number of unauthorized dumps, improve the household waste disposal system, and mitigate negative environmental impacts.
