“The position of chairperson in the United National Movement (UNM) will not be abolished,” Nanuka Zhorzholiani stated in an interview with Inga Grigolia’s “Reaction” program, commenting on a statement by the party’s acting chairperson, Tina Bokuchava. Earlier, the latter stated that she does not intend to leave the UNM, but given the uncertainty surrounding the procedures for abolishing the chairperson position, she is likely not planning to run for the post. Zhorzholiani expressed surprise that Bokuchava was unaware of this, as she claims the issue is being actively discussed within the party.
“Everyone in the party knows that the question of abolishing the chairperson position is not on the agenda at all. We are talking about a temporary governing group for a period of six months—until the elections are held. Crucially, the elections will be held by direct vote. As you know, there are two election formats: one where only party members (the Political Council) vote, and another where supporters are also given the opportunity to vote.
This is exactly how the elections were held between Levan Varshalomidze and Nika Melia, as well as between Levan Khabeishvili and Nika Melia. This rule was broken only once—when Tina Bokuchava became chairperson,” Zhorzholiani said.
It is worth recalling that Georgia’s imprisoned third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, previously announced the creation of a “Council of Reformers,” which he will head as chairman. According to him, Nanuka Zhorzholiani will serve as the council’s executive secretary.
