Russia’s Federation Council Highlights Role of Georgian Schoolchildren in “Memory Train” Project

The Russian Interests Section in Georgia reported that several Georgian school students have completed their participation in the so-called anniversary season of the “Memory Train” international project, which was dedicated to preserving the historical memory of the events of World War II.

According to the Russian side, students from various Georgian cities, along with peers from Belarus, the Russian Federation, and several other countries, traveled a commemorative route, visiting 13 cities in Belarus and Russia.

“It is symbolic that the anniversary season ended in Minsk and started at the walls of the Brest Fortress, where the Great Patriotic War began. A schoolboy from Tbilisi, together with the organizers, attached a symbol of Minsk to a collective panel as a symbol of the unity of peoples and shared historical memory,” the statement by the Russian representation in Georgia reads.

Konstantin Kosachev, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of Russia (the upper house of parliament), noted the important role of the participants from Georgia.

“We are very glad that children from Georgia have been with us on the ‘Memory Train’ for more than just one year. Those young people who traveled the ‘Memory Train’ route become ambassadors of goodwill, and I am confident they will succeed in what we perhaps failed to do—to restore and develop our relations, to make them truly friendly, because we all want this very much,” the Russian politician stated.

Alexander Lukyanov, a member of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, also emphasized the contribution of Georgians to the liberation of Belarus during World War II.

“We are proud that our Motherland was liberated not only by Russians and Belarusians, but, of course, by the entire multinational Soviet people, in the front ranks of whom stood our Georgian brothers. Operation Bagration, which practically became the crown of the Great Victory, the liberation of our Motherland, was key for our country,” Lukyanov stated.
